Mum on the Run (With a very numb bum) in Primark, Zara, Gap and Mulberry

With 7% battery left on my computer, I am up against the clock to get this post live before my computer shuts down for the night – which is something I would quite like to do but I can’t as I find myself at my daughter’s two hour cheer leading class, sitting in a freezing cold gym on an old fashioned school bench with a numb bottom!

This is my Primark yellow jumper which I posted about a few weeks ago. I wore it with Cos grey skinny jeans, Zara boots, a white shirt and my grey Mulberry bag.

Does anyone remember that advert for “Zest” soap years ago now? There was an aerosol button on the top of a bar of yellow Zest soap. Well that’s what I feel like when I wear this jumper – a bar of Zest soap – it’s all about the colour….but I still really like it!

Hi BethPrimrose yellow, is that the colour of your jumper do you think? My granny had a sports car in the same colour and she used to call it primrose yellow. Congrats on your column in easy living, go you! I have it book marked…:)

Hi Andress – such a nice sounding colour isn't it – primrose yellow? What a cool granny too. The jumper is a yellowy/green really, I think! Thanks for the congrats for the EL column. Fingers crossed it goes well!

Lovely to see a splash of colour at this time of year when everyone seems to be dressed in just black, brown or grey. I love your Mulberry handbag too

I love the way you layer clothes although as you seem to be quite petite I wonder how best to do it on a larger frame, I'm 5 '9' & broad shouldered & a bit of a tummy. I wear a 14 on top & 12 on bottom so while not heavy I can look bulky if I'm not careful. Any tips on layering for the larger frame?? Thanks a mill. Martina.

Hi Martina. OK, so to make your broad shoulders appear narrower, you need a v neck (avoid boat or crew necks or horizontal stripes)and also a shirt with lapels. So I would suggest layering an open neck shirt under a v-neck jumper and then perhaps working in a longline fairly fine knit cardi over the top, ideally with some shape at the waist, even if it is just gathered slightly at the back or it is given shape with its belt tied behind. You want to avoid thick bulky pieces so layering thermals under a shirt is good as you get that extra layer of warmth but without the bulk. Wearing darker colours on your top half will also redress the balance between your top and bottom half. Also think of wearing details that draw the eye in to the centre of your body – so depending on your bust size, a fairly chunky pendant, or a long streamlined fine knit scarf (like the missoni ones)or use block colours to draw the eye in – so a bright jumper with an open cardigan over it but in a darker colour – or longline cardis with details down the front edging – sequins/pattern etc all work. Hope that helps.

Love the outfit! Talking of knitwear! Have been browsing the H & M site today and spotted a cashmere cardigan for £39.99!!! Not sure what the quality will be like, but very tempted to purchase at the price! Wouldn't it be fab if Primark also did cashmere? There would probably be a stampede at their prices!

Hi Sharon – the H&M cashmere is lovely. I tried a client in a few pieces yesterday and she loved it. They do round neck jumpers, cardis and also jumpers with a twist pattern down them. Definitely worth ordering for a closer look. You are right about a stampede in Primark if they did it. Can you imagine?!

I have the same figure as the commenter two above, and agree I can look bulky in the wrong outfit. So I am also interested in layering tips. I am short waisted so have to be careful not to end up with too much around the middle, hiding my okay waist. My best looks are dresses to be honest.

Hi, if dresses work well for you, you could layer a white shirt underneath them and then wear a cropped fine knit cardi over the top which nips in at the waist to emphasise it. Your height will also impact on what suits you best but layering a long fine knit with a belt over the top (as opposed to slight gathering as advised above, (because Martina mentioned more of tummy)could work well for you. Thermals too as mentioned above, mean that you're not adding bulk. Hope that helps.
